The first permanent settlement in America by the English was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Many of the settlers died due to starvation, disease, and wars with the native peoples. Among the settlers was a class of English gentlemen who refused to work. They came from a society in England where they were served all their life. This led to a lack of discipline among the settlers. Captain John Smith knew that for the settlement to survive, all had to work. He made a rule that if a man doesn’t work, he doesn’t eat. This new discipline helped the settlement to survive. I believe that Captain John Smith knew what the Bible said about work: 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (KJV) For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
God instituted work. Adam and Eve worked to take care of the Garden of Eden. When they were removed from the Garden of Eden, they had to work even harder. Their sons had to work. Cain was a farmer, and Abel was a herdsman. The fourth commandment of the Ten Commandments includes a command to work: Exodus 20:9 (KJV) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Government studies have shown that unemployed people who are of working age have much greater risks of mental illness and chronic disease. I believe that God knows what is best for us, and He designed us to be workers. Idleness interferes with how our spirit, soul and body are to function.
Some work-related suggestions for the retired and disabled are the following: stay active (exercise, church services and activities, etc.); keep in contact with friends and relatives; and find meaningful hobbies or volunteer work.
God rewards our work. The words of Boaz to Ruth are appropriate here: Ruth 2:12 (KJV) The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
Hebrews 6:10 (KJV) For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
