“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” 2 Timothy 1:5

Timothy grew up under the influence of a grandmother and a mother who set an example for him and taught him the Scriptures. “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15

I doubt that Lois and Eunice had any idea that Timothy would become the man of God that he became. Timothy soon became Paul’s right-hand man. He helped Paul oversee several churches, and Paul left him in charge of some of them. He also co-authored some of Paul’s epistles. It is not surprising that Paul gives credit to Timothy’s mother and grandmother.

In the Old Testament, Jochebed, Ruth, and Hannah are great examples of motherhood. Moses’ mother Jochebed had greater influence on him than the pleasures and treasures of Egypt. Her other children Aaron and Miriam served with Moses in leading the children of Israel. Ruth was the great-grandmother of King David, and Hannah was the mother of Samuel.
