Introduction
The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippian church is not just a ‘thank you’ letter, though he does thank them for their support, especially as he resides in a Roman prison. Paul’s desire is to keep the gospel of Christ foremost on their minds. He had heard there were some divisions in the church caused by two ladies who were not of the same mind, Euodias and Syntyche. Paul knows that if people in the church are feuding with each other, then the furtherance of the gospel will be hindered. The Philippian church is one of Paul’s example churches. It is with great joy that he writes to them. As a shepherd wants to keep sheep moving in the right direction, Paul wants them to keep winning souls to Christ and seeing them grow in the Lord. He knows that even a little conflict may interfere with the ministry of the gospel.
Key Verse
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; -- Philippians 1:27
Paul beseeches the church that their manner of life be in accordance with the gospel of Christ. Now, a church could have great fellowship and unity, but not be doing anything for Christ. Paul wants to hear that they are working together for more gospel outreach.
Chapter 1
Paul speaks of ‘the gospel’ six times in chapter 1. He speaks of fellowship in the gospel, defense and confirmation of the gospel, furtherance of the gospel, defense of the gospel (2nd time), and striving together for the faith of the gospel.
Chapter 2
The theme of this chapter can be summed up in verse 2: that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. He uses the humility and exultation of Jesus Christ as an example for us. Epaphroditus exemplifies this kind of humility. This isn’t just for Euodias and Syntyche, we all need this message.
Chapter 3
Paul warns the church to not have confidence in the flesh. He gives a personal testimony. He ends his testimony with, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14. Paul warns the church of who not to follow, then he asks the church to be ‘thus minded’ and to follow him.
Chapter 4
This chapter includes some of the most quoted verses in the Bible. He commends his fellowlabourers in the gospel. He continues to speak of unity, rejoicing, prayer, the peace of God, right thinking, and contentment. He again asks the Philippian church to follow his example and teachings. For those who feel too weak or frightened he declares, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13. Let’s overcome any obstacles and serve the Lord faithfully in the gospel!
