King David Acknowledges God’s Gifts

1 Chronicles 29:14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee .

King David had taken an offering from the nation for materials to build the Temple. The preceding and following verses are from David’s prayer to God after receiving an abundant offering from the people. We acknowledge God’s gifts by returning to Him a portion of what He has given us. This is a principle taught through the entire Bible.

1 Chronicles 29:11-12 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty … Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

  • God gives us riches. For most of us God gives us a job from which we receive a paycheck. We honor God by our tithes and offerings and giving to others in need.
  • God gives us honor. We honor God with praise and thanksgiving, but we also honor God by honoring others, especially by lifting up the weak.
  • God gives us physical strength and abilities. We honor God by investing the strength and abilities He has given us to serve Him.

Let’s not take for granted what God has given us. God invests in us that we might invest in our church and others for the Glory of God.  Jesus told a story of a businessman who gave money to three of his employees to invest for him. Two of the men made good investments and were blessed doubly for their work. One man did not do anything with the money invested in him. How sad. He had the same opportunity as the others but did not do anything. He did not honor his employer. God has given us all so much. Let us honor God by multiplying His investment in us.

2 Corinthians 9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
