Christian Fellowship – Essential to a Long Life

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

In the spiritual realm our faith in Jesus Christ is a matter of eternal life or death, but what about the physical realm?

If a person participates actively in attending church, he or she may live five to fourteen years longer than if he or she did not attend church according to several scientific studies that have been done. God made us social creatures. He desires for us to fellowship with Him and with others – especially other Christians.

Loneliness and Isolation

Many studies have shown that people who suffer from loneliness live shorter lives. We live in a very disconnected society. Loneliness in America has doubled in the past 50 years. Now that many are wearing masks and isolating themselves due to Covid-19 there is an increase in loneliness and isolation. Some have turned to social media for help. Though social media does have some benefits, overall, it does more to contribute to loneliness than to help. According to Psychology Today a survey found that people who spend more time on social media felt lonelier than those who spend less time. People who addictively use their smartphones report being anxious, depressed, isolated, and lonely. Our digital activity may cause us to get less and poorer sleep. It can make us more distracted, distant, and drained.

Social media does have many benefits. We can connect with distant family and friends easily. If we miss a church service, we can watch it online. However, it is important that we use discernment in how we use social media.

God’s Solution – The Local Church

Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

God’s design for believers is that we can find encouragement and support in the continual assembling of ourselves. Due to health necessities some need to continue to stay home during the current Covid-19 situation. However, for long-term spiritual health we cannot deny the benefits of fellowship, taking whatever precautions we can one with another, as long as it is done with grace and wisdom!
