But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. Philippians 2:19-22
Timothy had been serving Paul and serving with Paul in the Gospel ministry for several years. He, along with Epaphroditus, probably delivered this letter to the church at Philippi. Paul would have liked to go to Philippi, but he was in prison. Timothy and Epaphroditus had brought Paul gifts from the churches and had ministered to Paul. Timothy was of the same mind as Paul. He was like a son to Paul. He would naturally care for the state of the Philippians. Timothy had a sincere love and real concern for the good of the churches. He cared for the good of the souls of the Philippians. He would shepherd them in the same manner as Paul would.
· Some praises of Timothy from Paul:
· My workfellow – Romans 16:21
· My beloved son and faithful in the Lord – 1 Corinthians 4:17
· Our brother – Colossians 1:1
· And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith: 1 Thessalonians 3:2
While the Apostle Paul was in prison, Timothy was a man that Paul could count on to minister to him and the churches. Timothy braved dangerous and rough roads and seas to minister the gospel to the churches and to return to Paul. Timothy even spent a brief time in prison.
From our verses in Philippians let’s meditate on the phrase, “care for your state.” This is something all of us can be faithful in. That is to care for the souls of others. Love others. Be concerned for their good. Encourage their love of Christ and look out for the good of their souls.
