A New Way of Thinking

A NEW WAY OF THINKING

Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Part or most of Philippians 2:5-11 may have been a hymn that the churches sung. Paul has made it clear why he has put this hymn in chapter two. He has been and will continue to emphasize unity among Christians. Selfishness and greed work against peace, contentment, unity, and the spread of the gospel. Jesus left the splendor of heaven and became an unselfish servant. He taught His disciples the importance of servanthood.

James and John sought special favors for themselves. As a result, there was friction between the disciples. The ten were ‘much displeased with James and John’. Jesus taught all twelve to be servants. Mark 10:43-45  But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

We are to have the mind of Christ. Jesus gave up many of His rights for the benefit of others. Jesus had the right to not take the form of a servant. He did not have to humble Himself and die on the cross an excruciating death. Jesus could have demanded His rights, but He did not.

Matthew 16:24 (KJV) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

As we follow Christ, we will have a servant’s attitude. We will desire that our life benefits others. We will listen to others and look out for others. Jesus taught us that we need to deny ourselves. We are to be peacemakers. We are to be merciful and meek. Our pride and our flesh will argue with our conscience regarding what Jesus taught. We often become our own worst enemy when we become proud and demanding. We bring a lot of unnecessary drama into our life and the lives of others. Jesus’ way is the best way to live a peaceful and contented life among family and friends. It is the best way to promote the gospel.
