Who is Your Counselor?
Others treated the Psalmist with contempt. They spoke against him. He felt like a stranger. Instead of being consumed with what others were saying about him, he delighted in God’s Word and listened to God’s advice. God was his Counselor.
Who do you listen to for advice? Many of us have suffered because of not listening to the advice of others. We need the advice of others: Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
However, God desires to be our primary Counselor. How would we have discernment to evaluate the advice of others without God’s Word and Wisdom? Proverbs 8:14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I amunderstanding; I have strength. Isaiah 8:19 … should not a people seek unto their God?... Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Psalm 73:24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
Isaiah warns us against finding security in this world apart from God: Isaiah 31:1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!
Does God counsel you through His Word? Is He your Counselor?
