Have you ever watched a football or basketball game where you were sure who was going to win, only to see the other team win in the last minute or seconds. I remember one game where the only time this one team was ahead, was in the last half second of the game.
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
The Roman soldiers, the Jews, and even Satan himself thought they had gotten rid of Jesus. Jesus had allowed them to whip Him, to spit upon Him, to mock Him, and to nail Him to a cross. While on the cross He was railed against and mocked. He was an amusement for some: Matthew 27:36 And sitting down they watched him there. -- They saw Jesus as a defeated foe. They had no expectation of Christ’s resurrection and victory.
235 times in the Old Testament God is called the LORD of hosts. Hosts are armies. God is LORD of the armies of heaven and earth. When God gave the Israelites victory over their enemies, they then spoiled their enemies. That meant that the armies of Israel removed all valuables from the dead and living of the defeated foes. Jesus disarmed and spoiled the devil and his minions and the powers of darkness.
Paul, in writing to the Colossians, wants them to realize that their hope is not in philosophies and rules, but in the person of Jesus Christ. We have victory only in Christ.
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
As we walk with Christ under the umbrella of His protection, there is nothing the Devil can do to us. We can overcome. We do not have to let Satan get the advantage over us. (2 Cor. 2:11)
Romans 8:31-32 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
Let’s be faithful today to walk with our Lord in victory!
