The Power of His Resurrection
Philippians 3:9-14 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ isn’t just an important historical event. It has everything to do with Christian living. It affects our outlook and hope. We die to our own self-interest and live a new life in Jesus Christ. We are empowered of God with the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.
The Foundation of Christianity
Without the resurrection it is quite certain there would have been no Christian church. With the death of their Master, the disciples were utterly confused and afraid for their own lives. There is not the remotest possibility that they could have continued as teachers of the Christ’s doctrines, and even less that others could have been persuaded to follow them, in those circumstances.
But with their assurance that Christ was alive, they went forth everywhere proclaiming the resurrection, and multitudes became believers in their living Lord. The importance of the resurrection in the preaching of the early church is quickly seen by scanning the book of Acts.
The Apostle Paul wrote of the resurrection of Christ in at least ten of his letters. After clarifying the truths of the resurrection to the church at Corinth he states: 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
