Psalm 119:93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

It should be our desire for God to quicken us. The Psalmist is giving God credit for quickening him. What does quicken mean? Quickened means to make alive, to revive, as from death or an inanimate state; to excite, to stimulate. One of the Bible words for revival is quickened.

There are many synonyms for the bible in Psalm 119. The bible is variously called the law of the Lord, His testimonies, His ways, Thy precepts, Thy statutes, Thy commandments, Thy righteous judgments, Thy word, etc. A precept is a command or instruction. It is one of the synonyms used in Psalm 119 for the Word of God. God uses His Word to quicken us. The Word of God is the tool that God uses. “For with them [God’s precepts] thou hast quickened me.”

Have you ever tried to do something but had to find the right tool first. The other day I was at the property that was my dad’s and needed to get a ladder. The ladder was locked with a bicycle lock. I didn’t have the best tool, which would have been a key. I used a variety of cutting tools and finally cut the ladder loose. Most of us have dozens of tools that we use for various things. The main tool that God uses is His Word.

We especially need reviving when our heart is hard. Jeremiah refers to the Word of God as a hammer.

Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

We need the hammer of God’s Word to break through our hard heart. God plows through our ‘fallow ground’ with His plow – the Word of God. According to Jeremiah and Ezekiel the purpose is to make our heart soft, that we might be humble and obedient servants.

Jeremiah 4:3 For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.

Hosea 10:12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

Jeremiah 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.



Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
