2 Timothy 2:24-26 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
· The world says, “They just need to have self-discipline”
· The world says, “They need a better self-image”
· This is all humanistic philosophy.
· But the verse says that they are in a snare. The devil takes them at his will. They oppose themselves. They are their own worst enemy.
o Proverbs 5:22-23
o Proverbs 7:21-27
· The Holy Spirit convicts and draws men to the truth.
· Repentance – Not as easy or as hard as the devil wants us to think. Before we sin the devil makes us think that forgiveness is better than permission. After we sin, the devil makes us believe that repentance is too difficult.
o Sin can cause our heart to get cold.
o We can get so entangled in sin, that repentance can be very complicated. Examples:
§ Living together in immorality with children – Often women worry about who will take care of them.
§ Working as a bartender
§ Part of a gang; ungodly tattoos, etc.
· Gentle – Softness in manners
· Apt to teach (Knowledge of the Bible, the Truth and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ) 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
· Patient – Especially with the shortcomings of others
· Meek – Not causing friction – Not self-seeking – Not taking things personally – Listening
· Instructing (Counselling, teaching, preaching, etc.)
