Last week I wrote regarding Jesus being referred to as “The Word” and “The Word of God.” Today I would like to illustrate the power that is in Christ’s words. In Genesis 1 God spoke the worlds into existence. We see the term, “And God said” followed by the creation event. In the gospels we see miraculous events taking place with the spoken word of Jesus. Here are a few examples:
· He healed the lepers: Luke 5:13… I will: be thou clean. … and Luke 17:14 …, Go shew yourselves unto the priests.
· He cast out devils: Luke 4:35 …, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. …
· Peter, James and John had failed to catch fish until Jesus said: Luke 5:4 …, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
· He turned fishermen into fishers of men: Luke 5:10…, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
· He raised a widow’s son from the dead: Luke 7:14 …, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
· He healed blind men: Luke 18:42… Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee. John 9:7 …, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, …
· He healed the man with palsy and forgave his sins: Mark 2:5 …, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. Mark 2:11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
· He calmed a storm: Mark 4:39 …, Peace, be still. …
· He healed a withered hand merely by saying: Mark 3:5 … Stretch forth thine hand. …
· He raised Lazarus from the dead: John 11:43 …, Lazarus, come forth.
· He cursed a fig tree, and it withered and died: Mark 11:14 …, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever.
Application to us:
Jesus’ words to us are Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
These are powerful words to us. Are you allowing fear, worry, and anxiety to overcome you? How about lust and the cares of this world? We don’t become overcomers by fixing things in our own power. Only when yoked to Christ do we have power to overcome the power of sin and those sinful emotions that are a disturbance of our soul. Only Christ can give us true rest and satisfaction. When we come boldly before Christ’s throne of grace, He gives us of His mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:16).
